Sarah6281, I've found an old recipe that I remember my mother making. Hope it's near to what you're looking for. You'll have to convert to metric though.

Sieve together:- 8ozs self raising flour
1 level teasp. baking soda
1 heaped teasp. mixed spice

In Saucepan:- 3 oz margarine
3 oz sugar
1/3 pint milk
8oz sultanas
1 tblsp. treacle
Boil for 5 mins. Cool slightly, add beaten egg and flour etc. Beat well. Add to well greased loaf tin for approx 1 1/2 hrs. in moderate oven.
Slice, butter and enjoy.

I haven't seen this recipe for years, so think I'll give it a go myself!!

Hi Sarah6281
Here is a recipe my mum used to make, it's very sweet and scrummy!
In a saucepan:
4oz margarine or butter
1/4pt water
1 rounded tablespoon golden syrup
2 -3 oz sugar (brown is best, but white will do)
mixed fruit, about 3 - 4 oz, nuts if liked
bring to the boil, and simmer for a few minutes, cool slightly then add I teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda and mix in 4oz of self raising flour and 1 teaspoon of mixed spice(if liked) bake at 170 - 180 degrees in a bun tin, in the centre of the oven until a skewer inserted comes out clean. Cool and spread with butter..............Hope you enjoy
Hi Sarah 6281,
I was given this recipe a long time ago and it is perfect.
1 mug of milk, 1 mug of dark brown sugar, 1 mug of mixed fruit but I usually add more, especially sultanas and raisins, 2 mugs of Self Raising Flour, I actually use wholemeal flour. 6oz margarine, 1 egg and 1 heaped teaspoon of mixed spice. Put into a large saucepan the milk, margarine, sugar and fruit. Boil until the margarine has melted. Take off heat and cool for 15 minutes. Now add flour, egg and spice. Beat together with wooden spoon until all mixed together. Put into baking tin I use a 7inch round 4" deep tin. and bake for 1-1.1/2 hours. 175 electric 145 circotherm. It is just delicious and a little healthy with skimmed milk and wholemeal flour.
I've just made one of these today, its a favourite of ours.
4oz marg or butter
6oz sugar
6oz currants
6oz sultanas
2oz chopped peel
8fl oz water
1 level teasp bicarb of soda
1 heaped teasp mixed spice
place all ingredients in saucepan bring to boil and simmer one minute. put into a mixing bowl and cool for about 10 minutes
Then add 2 beaten eggs
4oz plain flour
4oz sr flour
pinch salt
mix well grease a 7 or 8in tin ( I use a non stick loaf tin) and bake in the centre of oven preheated to gas 4 or 359f for abou 1 hour or until ready ( test with a skewer if it comes out clean its ready)
