Just read a story that Premier Inn has bought a 1m plot on the moon to build a 'motel' - like that doesn't sound daft enough, who've they 'bought' it off!? Who owns the moon to be able to sell chunks of it?

There are people who sell you land on the moon (although as you say, have they the right to sell it as they do not own it)

I suppose if the Americans were the first on the moon, then they claimed it?
trust it to be the americans thinking they can sell it

what do they do with the money I wonder
Who'd want to go to the moon for a holiday in the first place!! can't imagine the beaches are that good! though you would get an awesome tan very quickly with all that solar radiation.
Where did you read it , the Sun ?
Squarebear was correct in the assumption that the Americans own the moon. Crazy as this sounds, it's not unlike the British empire which involved sailing around the world and sticking a flag in a foreign country.

As Eddie Izzard once said,

British Empire: "I claim India for Britain"

Indians: "You can't claim us, we live here. 500 million of us."

British Empire: "Do you have a flag?"

Since the USA got there first, they technically own it.
