Hello, I have a Sony DAV S500 DVD player that wont play dual layer DVD's anymore but is happy with single layer and CD's. How does the player read the dual layer format, and does anyone know how to reset it?

On a dual layer disc the layer nearest the surface is semi transparent. The laser reads the lower layer by refocusing through this semi transparent upper layer - just like the eye can focus on near or distant objects. If your player will not read any two layer disk but is happy with single layer, then you may have a fault with the circuitry which controls focus. It is something which will need either an engineer to fix or Santa to bring you a new one...
