Can a hotel charge for cleaning up after vacation?

I know this question should be put in Law, but this really is very urgent, and I would appreciate any advice on this from anyone who has has a similar experience.

Last weekend I spent 3 nights in a hotel in Blackpool, which shall remain nameless (perhaps I should name it to shame them) which cost me a total of 75. All went well, and I thought nothing more of it, until this evening when I get home I find a letter from them saying I had left the room in an unacceptable state, and they are demanding a bill of 65 from me, saying this is what it has cost them to clean it. The only thing out of the ordinary is that admittedly I did vomit once during this stay, but that was into the toilet, and not anywhere else. Vomit being water based should be very easy to clean off, and should not be hard to clean. They are saying that if I do not pay this bill then they will take legal action against me. They also state I am not welcome at this hotel again, which is superflous, as I will not stay at this hotel if it is the last one on Earth.

They also say that this happened last time, which is untrue, as if this were the case then they should have addressed the problem there and then, and not allowed me to stay there. Are there any legal experts out there who can advise me, as to whether they are just trying it on to get more money out of me. I know there is a soiling charge of 80 in a taxi, but this is not a taxi, and things like vomit should not be a problem.

Can anyone in the know please advise me, as I do not want to pay this bill, but do not wish legal action to be taken again me either?

Thanks for any replies!

Actual letter quoted below.

"Dear JonnyBoy12,

Following your departure of our guest house our staff came across an unacceptable mess in the en-suite. Our records also show that the time you visited before also had more than the normal messs to clean when you left.

The time and materials needed to clean the mess you left behind has led us to send you the cleaning cost of 65. We require you to pay this by 20th May 2008 to prevent further action being taken.

We would also ask you not to book again with our guest house.

Regards

An annoyed hotel owner."

A normal mess? What the hell is a normal mess, when it is at home? If I had done this before why didn't they tell me then, and ban me before. They did not say what the mess was, although the only thing I did leave was admittedly some vomit stains on the toilet. They have never cleaned up vomit before. What I am supposed to do in the hotel, not touch anything, or use the shower or loo?
PMPL. That used to be my friend Ericas hotel. She has moved from there now.

I bet you went to the Karaoke night at The Bridge Pub on Lytham Road didnt you, just facing the place where they sell all those Dora towels outside.

I bet you got drunk in the bridge and then threw up.

This is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO funny.

Sod them. Ignore them.

They will go away.

Next time stay at the new Travel Lodge on Bloomfield Road if you like that particular area. They are doing rooms on the internet now for as little as 9 a night.

You admitted on here you did vomit in the toilet. Did you confess to them you vomited? How did they know? If you hadn't told them surely you must have left some trace of evidence for them to pin-point you.

Ask them to show you proof like a photo, not eye witness. Anyone can lie and say they saw. If they cannot provide proof then there's no evidence it was yours or you did it.
Any Incontanace issues would also make a good case for them.....

Katie maybe able to help me with a Question on this Was down last year and found a very friendly Pub Great meals ....Next to a coach park and very much on the North side Had a Family Games room and A roundabout ....Cant remember the name of the B+B mind you .....Not as Far as Fleetwood ...But seemed close.

Will look it out if need be....No Probs with Incontanance Nor Extra charges for Spewing in the EnSuite.....Would go back Tomorrow.
Info Bank. The pub is called The Gynn, sort of adjacent to The Savoy. Nice okay pub with a conservatory on Gynn Square on the corner of Dickson Road there.

A Family / Games room to the right and a Beer garden With a small playpark to The far right.....Great time had by all and Loved the visit to Blackpool nfor the first ime in my Life .
Hi Katie

I stayed at The Grosvenor View .... Well outside the Central area.

Still not far from a Great Pub. Next to the Rounadabout....And Coach Park.

First, Thank you Barry for alert. Jonathon Britton (Jonnyboy12) booked on line for the second time to stay at our guest house. The last time he stayed he left his room filthy. The second time he stay we couldn't believe he came back but accepted him. When he left our cleaner had found human excrimant (sorry if i've spelt it wrong) all up the shower walls. We found this to be unacceptable and have charged MR Britton for the sanitising of the complete room.
We didn't expect to get the money for the cleaning, just put him off returning. However now looking at the comments from Mr Britton we will be persuing legal action over the contents of his comments.
Ask them politely to produce evidence that they had to spend the amount they specified in order to clean up your mess.

You are pursuing legal action of the contents of my comments? If anything it should be me, I did not leave human excriment up the shower wall at all, I presume you were referring to the fact that I admittedly vomited in the toilet, and that was all I did. I shall certainly expect to see proof of these false allegations. If there was human excriment then it must have been someone else's room, and that was not me. Anyone is permitted to have their say on Answerbank I was only asking other people their opinion, so let's just leave it here, as I did not contaminate the shower in the way you said I did. You did not state how the room was soiled, and I certainly did not do that. As for the previous stay if staying in my bed, and using my shower counts as making a room filthy then you should not allow any guests.
I'm just a bystander watching this drama unfolding, but in the interest of fairplay, I hope you've seen this Jonny http://www.theanswerbank.co.uk/ChatterBank/Que stion562926-3.html

Dear Kerwin,

I apologise for the inconvenience I may have caused you, and I am now writing to notify you that the cheque for the cleaning bill is in the post now, and should be with you by Monday. Could you please send me a receipt for this amount by return?

I hope you continue to have a busy and profitable season.

Yours sincerely
