Does anyone now what the underlying (or not) theme of this song is?
Is about saving a relationship or actually saving someone's life?

I always thought it was about feeling guilty that you couldn't help someone who killed themself but that might just be my interpretation.

That's what I thought at first too - but then listening to the lyrics more, it's like it's someone trying to save a relationsip and that person not wanting to.
But then, I've just seen a new video they released to accompany the song which I downloaded through iTunes, and it's just loads of people crying holding placards of people they have lost, interspersed with rules of how to be with the people you love......
It's a lush song - makes me cry everytime I hear it!
There's a few interpretations of the lyrics on this site: http://www.songmeanings.net/lyric.php?lid=3530 822107858556882
