Can anyone tell me how to enable grayed out buttons in font effects, i keep getting an error message saying this feature is disabled because its not compatable with microsoft word 6.0/95. i dont undstand as i dont have 6.0/96 installed on my computer, or any files saved with it either. My operating system is windows XP.

It would be helpful if you stated which version of Office you do have. In Office 2007 (for example), You can set the default format for saving files (so that you can guarantee that they can be opened by people who only have access to earlier versions of Office).
You do this as follows:
Click the stupid down arrow button near the stupid new File button at the top left.
From the menu, select More commands
On the side bar select Save
In the dropdown "Save files in this format" you will find a list of earlier formats in which you can elect to save a document.

thanks rogerWilco but it does not answer my question.
I have office 2003, the problem is in office word 2003, im trying to get a word to emboss and animate it too but the buttons are grayed out. when i try click on them i get an error message as i said before.
As I thought I had explained, the problem is probably because either the original document was created in an earlier version, or because the default saving format has been set for backward compatibility.

Hi rojash, This was a new document, and how do i change the default saving format ?
Choose Options from the Tools menu.
Select the Save tab
Use the Save Word Files As drop-down list to select a default file format.
Click on OK.
