Apart from Max Clifford, are there any other British PR agents able to get someone in the papers regardless, on payment of their fee?

He is able to within a week usually though I don't know if he offers a guarantee.

There are loads of Max Cliffords about. It just depends on your story. Journalists are not interested in self promotional stories unless they have an interesting twist. Work out what market your story will interest and look up PR agencies that cover that market ie. food & drink specialists if there is a food angle, or for celebrity promotion try people like Neil Redding or Matthew Stubbs.

Thanks sharkman, basically after 44 years hoping to get into TV but having too many exams to work for an equity card, I've reached the point where any way to get in before I start drawing my pension will do. I have been doing comedy most of my life, as well as a number of other things such as lecturing and counselling, which can all be done on the radio/TV, but need a way in and am prepared to invest what I can afford to try. I'll start looking around and see what the 'USP's could be!
