Have just answered 19(a) for myself with help of internet. Wellaway is old english word for Alas (in case anyone else did not know!)
Still welcome opinions on 7 down
I thought at first it was risen. I now think it is resin.
Got up most of = rise adding an n for resin substance in varnish

I would go for ROSIN, as per your explanation.
Welladay is another possible according to Chambers' dictionary
