broken leg healing process advice

hubby broke his leg 6 weeks ago.he has what is called an external fixator on his leg held with what looks like scaffolding around his knee with pins going through the knee joint.he has 2 pins held with 2 rods over his shin.what i would like to know is.
what food source is good to help the bones knit together.any ideas will help as he is getting really fed up.cos he is normally such an active man.look forward to replies.he is now drinking 1pint milk daily as that is supposed to be good for calcium.
