Hi, my daughter is 20 and she has a 5.5 month old daughter, presently living at home but would love to rent a private property, can anyone please inform us to which benefits she would be entitled too, she dosnt work at the moment but hopefuly returning in the next few months to work 16 hrs a week. Thank you

if she isnt working at all she will be entitled to full benefits. these include housing benefit, council tax benefit, income support and family tax credits.
They deduct any maintenance from the income support but allow you to keep the first �10.00 of any you receive from the childs father. Family tax credit is �81.00 per week, per child and income support is �59.00 minus any maintenance. Housing benefit depends on the amount of rent to be paid, they assess the property and decide whether it is worth the rent being charged and award her accordingly. So long as she only has enough bedrooms that she needs, she should get the full amount. She will get full council tax benefit.

Once she starts working, provided she is doing the 16 hours she will still be entitled to an amount of the housing benefit and council tax benefit, plus working family tax credits and child tax credits. The DWP work it all out for her, the amount she earns, along with any child care she needs etc so she wont be worse off working, she will be better off.

Hi Tamirra. I have a couple of houses that I rent out and I live in Blackpool. I dont know if you have the same legislations where you live but with single parents here there are the following benefits.

The Rent Bond Scheme. This is scheme run by the council which assists vulnerable people (i.e. single mums with babies that are living in cramped conditions or have been asked to leave home (nudge nudge wink wink). Bascially, your daughter would go and find a nice little two bedroomed house or flat where the Landlord/Lady would have to agree to taking someone from the Rent Bond Scheme. (a lot of them do). The Council will then go and assess the house and ensure that it meets the requirements for your daughter, i.e. heated, glazed, smoke alarms etc. The council will then UNDERWRITE the bond required by the landlord for her and pay the first months rent to the landlord in advance. The maxium available in my town for a lone parent with one child is �109.00 per week. She will also get help with furniture. (2nd hand but decent stuff). The landlord will then have to wait for the next months rent for 8 weeks but then he or she will get it paid direct into their account for the next 6 months. During this time, your daughter would have to pay the landlord so much a week (I take a fiver) out of her benefit to build up the bond.

As for benefits to live on I am not quite sure but by the looks of it, Jules has posted you with all this wonderful information.
