we had the same problem they made a nest in the chimney and it was awfull as they were coming in from behind the gas fire and yes they do sting ,,we had to get a man in to smoke them out, i am sure if you phone your local enviromental health pest control department they will sort you out, after all you pay council tax so you might as well get something out of it, mullein
When we had a similar problem(wasps in the attic) I found they were getting into the bathroom via a tiny gap near the light pull switch  This was rectified with a little bathroom sealant around the switch so it could be worth checking for gaps.
They won't use that nest again but you might find a new nest gets built next year. They'll be dying off very soon now except for the queens and they won't bother you
As Drewhound has said, if they are outside, they won't bother you. They are actually considered 'good' insects as they are predators of caterpillars and spiders.
Wait until the nest is empty around October, then just break up the nest. Although when I read up on it, it said that wasps never re-use old nests. At the end of the summer when all the other wasps have died, the queen searches for a place to hibernate. And like one of the other posters said try to find and block any exit/entry holes
