A friend of mine is about to start a short course of counselling for issues relating to past relationships which is causing her to be very insecure about her current relationship.

Has anyone had counselling for this or a similar problem and has it worked?

Hey wisewoman,

I have had several courses of counselling and have found it very useful.

I do go back for further counselling if I feel the need, it's an ongoing process not something that you have once and you are sorted.

Myself and my then boyfriend attended counselling for a number of relationship issues we both had. I agree with Banjo in that it is an ongoing process, not that I have felt the need (yet?) to return to counselling, however it gives you the tools to tackle things and "counsel" yourself. It's difficult to explain what I mean without giving too much away, but suffice to say I found it very useful and would reccommend it to anyone.

P.S. Five years after attending the counselling we are married, in our first house and our first baby is due tomorrow so you could say it worked for us :-)

Hope everything works out for your friend wisewoman x
