So, now that we know the name, telephone number, and address of the git that broke into our car, (by the way, he came back last night!) can the police arrest US if we break his fingers? He's early 20's, NOT on drugs, has rich parents and no job, and has been known to do things of this sort out of sheer boredom. Also just got out of jail recently. I'd almost feel better about it if he were simply on drugs, because then atleast he could get help. But there's no cure for Idiocy.
Our law systems often thwart justice anyway, and I wonder if they would arrest us for some trivialties instead of the guy who's actually causing problems for many people in the neighborhood?

What do we think would happen, or what do we think should happen?

If you break his fingers, I think you are likely to end up with a criminal record and possibly a jail sentance (depending on the county / state / country you are in).

Sadly, I think that it would be right for you to end up with a criminal record.  You should not act as judge, jury and executioner.  Who is to say what the appropriate punishment should be - not you, as an interested party.  I did say sadly, as I have a lot of sympathy for your situation and your frustrations.

You know, I couldn't actually hurt the guy ( a. I'm a sissy and
b. he's pretty strong)
I exaggerate saying I'd break his fingers, but if he does come back, and he breaks the window again is that treated the same as if he were in our house - meaning throwing rocks at him or whatever would be considered self-defense? Or would it be considered assault?

I recall you are in the US?  If so, it would depend very much on State law - in certain Southern States you could probably deploy a fearsome array of weaponry.  Also I guess it might depend on where the car was parked - on your property, in another private place or on the public highway.

Do you know this clown's parents or have any contact with them?  Is it likely to become a bigger problem for you in you get into conflict with them - neighbourly disputes can become pretty horrible.

If you threw a rock, you risk hitting your own car (bad), or making him angry enough to hit you (very bad).  Perhaps have a camera ready to take photos and present as evidence to the Police?

Ooh, the camera is a great idea!!!
I guess we'll just have to wait until the cop calls us back and see what the local law is, and hopefully find out if they have enough to arrest him.
I get crazy ideas when I'm all worked up! Thanks for keeping my head straight.
Peace!

Yinzer, get some evidence - as already suggested, try taking photographs or video and presenting them to the Police, or better still, hire a hitman!!!.

If you were in the UK you would realise that there is no connection at all between the Law and Justice!

We phoned the police immediately after someone had smashed a rear window & broke into our car, to try to steal the Radio/CD player. All we wanted was for the police to come out & fingerprint the car & hopefully find the culprit - this is after all what we pay our 'taxes' for isn't it? They didn't want to know & just said to claim from our insurance. However, if we had have caught the @rsehole in the act, I wouldn't have wanted my husband to fight him/her off, as most of these people only steal to sell on for drugs, etc. You never know if they have a knife or indeed a gun on them, ready to attack you - so beware!
id would be a real shame if the little scrote ran into you and your mate, got a serious beating  not knowing who from! Im not violent by any means, but if the police did nothing i would introduce his face to a brick wall....

I had a caravan vandalised a while back and the advice from the police was that as long as there were no witnesses I would be as well dishing out my own brand of justice.

Saves time, money, and paperwork was their attitude.  Just don`t get caught.

Good point made earlier on the difference between Law and Justice.
