Does anyone know the cause of Red Eye on photographs and can anything be done to avoid it.

yes, its the light reflecting off the back of the retina when the pupil is fully dilated.
its just the light reflecting weirdly, so change the lighting, or edit it afterwards on your computer

you can buy a camera with an anti red eye feature which basically just pre flashes two or 3 times, closing the pupil then taking the photograph before it opens again.

or take the photograph in daylight when the flash is not needed. you can also reduce red eye by using a flash that is further away from the lens (ie a flash gun)

It only happens to my grandsons eyes when i use my N82 mobile phone cam

Hi Bob906, I have lots of photos with red eyes - but they were not taken with a digital camera. Its caused when the flash is too close to the lens. Most digital cameras have a facility to reduce the red eye effect. You can normally edit photos to remove 'red eye' if you can upload them and by using a product such as 'Photoshop' or 'Irfanview'.
