Why do some men have to spit?

It seems to be a male thing. Is it just a dirty habit? It is nasty. Why do they do it? I have never needed to do it. My husband does not do it ( well not as far as I know) Is it illegal to do it in public? If not , it should be!

we wiped out TB in this country because you got fined if you spit in the street and then along came people from other countries who had the habit of spitting in the street and now we have TB back again, I wonder why ?

Correct, leg, it's not just a male thing, all the baby tarts do it round here.
I think they are imitating their football heroes, who can be seen doing it quite often on t/v

Grossly unfair to blame 'foreigners' for this.

Some footballers do it, some youths do it, some middle-aged men do it, some old men do it, some foreigners do it.

I hate it. It is an offence to spit in public and I wish it could be enforced more.

Although I do believe it was the public service information films on tv and cinema that was more effective in stamping it out in the 1950s than fines. Other people were quite vocal in their disapproval, at a time when it seemed to matter what people thought of one.
