I have never really been into feeding ducks etc...as I've believed that bread can't be ideal for them (you don't often see them queueing in the bakery) They've probably got enough food at this time of year anyway, but what would be the best food to help them out in the winter months if you wanted to? Does all the bread that they get given at this time of year harm them in anyway?

Oh that did make me laugh, imagining ducks, etc., queuing at the bakery counter!
You may well laugh, Smudge. My local town is Fakenham. The town is full of ducks who live on the River Wensum and they DO QUEUE UP outside the two baker shops (and sometimes venture inside) especially when it's nearly closing time and the leftovers are fed to them. Don't know whether it's good for them, but they seem to think it is!
Ah, I'd love to see them in the bakers shop. It sounds like an animated film, like Babe!
They also walk up and down the streets trailing their ducklings behind them and sleep in the market square. Sometimes I think we have more ducks than people!
Anniekon - to pay for their bread, do they carry loose change around with them, or do they just stick it on their bill..?
Thanks for the laugh IndieSinger - has made a nice end to the day.
Good one IndieSinger, good one!!! Full marks for that!
It's 23:40 & I'm just off to bed. I can't wait to tell our daughters & Grandchildren about the ducks, it really made me laugh. Nite, nite all.
Anneikon, nothing to do with the Q but my dad lives near Fakenham I think (in Norwich) and he's a baker (but I don't know which bakery), though I dont think he gets any ducks in his shop.

Seems it isnt such a good idea.
Natalie_1982, Norwich is about 25 miles from Fakenham. It's a really lovely city, full of interest and great for shopping.
Hi WoWo, just read that web page & I shall think twice about feeding the ducks, etc., on our next visit to the local canal.

PEABODY DUCKS

Me and Mrs Rinkytink stayed here on our honeymoon. The Ducks were very cool.
Hi rinkytink, I've just read that web page, thank you. What a wonderful thing to do. I bet you both enjoyed it. Happy married life to you both.

yes, bread is the worst possible thing to give ducks. they are capable to helping themselves as they eat almost anything. but if you want to help then feed them kitchen scraps. they even eat boiled eggs and chicken in small strips. left over food is also an option unless it is spicy or is rice based
