Considering the number of people who like a smoke and the relatively few people who work on the premises surely a breathing mask of some sort could be invented/adapted to cover the staffs mouths and noses....or something like it, or perhaps a completly shut off section for the staff...like tellers booths in a bank ...a complete perspex sheet from bar top to ceiling.... I mean doesn't needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.....

Obviously a smoker then Maxwell, I'm not going to give you the satisfaction of a response! I can't get my head round your arrogance!!

i smoke and for a year or so i worked in a betting office full of smoke so i constantly had a sore throat and over the year i developed asthma to cut a long story short i left and after 2 years the asthma has gone and yes i still smoke,,perhaps if restaurants and pubs installed decent air conditioning the problem would not be so bad..i dont object to pubs and places having no smoking areas..as long as their is an area for the smokers also.....mullein
mullein - do you not think 'no-smoking' areas defeat the object though!?!? The main reason that the laws are being reviewed is because of the number of deaths/illnesses caused by passive smoking. The law has been wrong for ages! People have the right to chose to smoke if they so wish, but non-smokers don't have the right to choose!

Perhaps an alternative would be to put smokers in a box with no air holes, and then they could pollute each other.  Sometimes my girlfriend starts smoking, but it's because when that happens I just slow down.

here in ireland im a none smoker nd we have the ban..i tink its fantastic! i dnt ave ta suffer ne more..
I agree with a ban in the work place but outside I do not. It is a bad habit and one I would like to quit but the fact is that for all the claims on the burden on the NHS that smokers cause the duty from ciggy sales to the government far outweighs the burden if the revenue was put towards the NHS rather than Millennium domes and the arts!
maxwellsmart, you state: "I mean doesn't needs of the many out weigh the needs of the few.....". As 75% of the country are non-smokers I take it you're advocating a complete ban on smoking in public areas then?

UNREAL! I live where a city-wide ban was recently implemented. I miss smoking when I go to the bar, which is seldom, but otherwise it's great. BTW, isn't health sort of a need? Even for smokers?

Cutting down tip: Quit smoking at work (I did long before the ban) & your overall consumption drops dramatically, immediately. Just by not smoking one at each break I went from a 1/2 pack/day to a pack/wk. Effortlessly. I just didn't want to go into the smelly smokers lounge because I found everyone coming out to reek disgustingly even when I did smoke at work.

It all comes down to money. Like someone else said about how the money NHS pays out for smoking related illnesses, versus how much will be lost from fewer ciggy sales. Also, a business is likely to have more patrons not come due to the smoking, but not likely to have patrons not come due to the non-smoking. (Wow, can I be any more grammatically incorrect?)
Smokers keep the non smokers out of pubs, so I think your idea is rubbish!  Pubs could possibly gain more than they lose from a smoking ban.
I lost both my parents to cancer caused by smoking. Thanks a lot. I miss them so badly. I hope I never meet you.

SELF CENTRED, ARROGANT, SELFISH, IGNORANT. I will always oppose people like you.  I cannot believe your post. GET A LIFE!

As a smoker myself i am actually quite looking forward to the ban i am planning on quitting so this will certainly help me. I must say 'maxwellsmart' that i don't think you are very smart at all for that comment!! Think of all thge people that die each year from passive smoking etc....Makes me feel awful and what it does to you is even worse i feel guilty every time i light up and i've cut down no end so i'm all for it...

I would love it if smoking was banned in pubs. I haven't been near them in the last few months because I'm pregnant and the smoke not only makes me feel ill but could be harming the baby as well so I avoid them like the plague. That might sound selfish but even before I was pregnant I couldn't stand the sore/red eyes and bad throat that go along with a night in a smoky atmosphere.
