Hiya. For YEARS I have NEVER done ANY form of exercise due to back problems latterly, and sheer laziness formerly. I have however, lost quite a bit of weight and am bounded with energy. My daughter and I are planning to run the Race for Life. It is only 5km but on the other hand if you have NEVER walked 5km in your life, let alone ran it, what and how would be the best way to start. My daughter and I are typical townies and take a car, taxi, bus, tram, moped everywhere !

Let the Lord Help Us ! So any advice is welcome.

Good morning
Well done on entering the Race for Life - it is great fun and people run and walk it so you will be fine. The answer is to build slowly. Go fo walks (not miles) and increase your pace gradually. Then when you are out try running for a short period followed by more walking, then running a bit more. You should see an increase in stamina and be able to run more and more. That said a huge number of people walk the course aso it doesn't matter if you can't run the whole 5K.

Thanks Bens Mum. My little girl and I have have just sped walked around Fairhaven Lake in Lytham St Annes TWICE (about 1.5km round each time), then fed the swans and ducks, then collapsed in the cafe for a hot chocolate. It was great fun and great to be outdoors. (To reiterate we are townies and spend most of the weekends in the pub getting up to no good).

I am however, trying to give up drinking so much too. So it was good for us all round and the thought of a glass of wine now or later horrifies me. lol.

Dear Homerbart.

Due to a back injury I put on heaps of weight and went up to just under 22 stones (and am 5ft 2 and a bit) so it was hideous.

I opted for the HARD WAY but lost 10 stones in 9 months with a Gastric Band.

If you have any questions on this type of weight loss, I would be very happy to answer them / advise you etc.

I am trying to set up a blog or something where people like us can share experiences and tips. Am going to try Monday. Also trying to set up a Facebook page, but am a bit dim, so I may be some time.
