The official abreviation of Hampshire for postal purposes is Hants. The T is usually explained by the fact that the county was originally called Southamptonshire or Hamptunshire - but nobody seems to know where the N comes from.
Got it! Apparently, another former name for the county was Hantshaving, and that's the reason for the abbreviation Hants.(Incidentally, in similar fashion, the official abbreviation for Northamptonshire is Northants.)
