It depends on the severity. I have heard of heart attacks that can go on for a few hours. Obviously the more severe the quicker you die.

a few seconds some minutes, my grandad basically passed out and shortly after was "dead" he probably had the attack and died,

I think technically we all die of a heart attack (in the case of normal death) we only refer to it as heart attack if its a younger person than expected.
