Is it right that your building society can charge you just to have a look at the deeds of your house?

Yes they usually charge 25/50 and charge extra if you want photocopying.Just go on your Building Society's web site and put in charges to find out how much it will cost you.
when I remortgaged a few years ago the building society sent all the deeds to me as they no longer keep them at branches, i have everything for the last 80 years on the house, it is brilliant. ask them for the deeds, they donl;t need to keep them by law so why let them hang onto them?
That applies if your land is registered, as most are. However, there are still a few thousand unregistered properties in England and Wales.

If yours is one of these, you have no choice but to pay the costs to the BS.
Or you could just go onto the land registry website and download them yourself for a small fee (around a fiver).

As Ethel says, this will only work if you have 'registered land' - you can do a search on Land Reg free to see if your land is registered.
When did you buy and what do you want to see?

Many lenders don't keep them anymore and they stay with the solicitor used so may be worth checking with them and they may have copies of what you need anyhow.

In any event, as said about you can get a copy of the title register from the Land Registry if it's registered. It's only 3 for a copy of the register and 3 for the plan.

Thank you all so much for your help and advice.
related to this question, a bye- the- bye. When you have paid off your mortgage, many Building Societies will charge you to 'store' the deeds, say 25p a, may also charge you, to finalise paperwork and return them to you.
The answer is, when you get to the end of your mortgage, dont pay it off. If you leave say 1 outstanding, the B/Soc will not charge for storage, if they want you to carry on paying interest it should be negligable, only charged on the 1.
I think there is no need for written deeds now. everything is kept on computer. Check with the Land Registry.
