Why not ban them altogether? You hardly see them in USA or Canadian supermarkets where they have used recycleable paper sacks for decades. Why don't we use brown paper sacks here, they don't have handles to carry in the street, but for getting the shopping to and from the car they are ideal.

Carol Anne , Just the same as europe, all major S/Market's
in the USA use plastic carrier bag's. Much, much bigger of
course, it is the smaller independant shop's that use paper bag's & liquor stores.
Im still using the 3 cloth type carrier bags I've had for years. I refuse to accept plastic bags.
yes i think that a cloth bag would be better than plastic as its reusable, cost effective, it is kinder to the environment, could need quite a roomy cloth bag though to fit all your essential shopping for the week!
Buy a cotton bag from the Co-op think they are 79p .
You can get loads of stuff in it or ...a Tesco Big Green
bag 49 p... the lady in the shop in front of me today had at least 15 carrier bags ...most only had 2 items in them ...
its quite good that the government are addressing global environmental issues and introducing ideas that can only benefit us as human beings who live on this planet, its hardly cost effective to pollute the environment in looking at the longterm problems that could occur if global environmental issues are not dealt with accordingly, it is always wise to remember we as human beings are not the only generation who have to live on earth, and i think everybody can play their part towards creating a less polluted environment both in the immediate, near future and also for future generations to come. i think we as humans owe it to our planet, to respect the environment.
