Would you be in favour of paying a subscription in order to post on Answerbank? I'm thinking not a huge amount, more of a nominal sum really like 5 a month, as a way to combat the problem of trolling and abusive/offensive posts. The idea is that you would have to sign up to a monthly "pay as you go" type subscription (with no tie-in) and pay by direct debit only. That way you would have to enter your bank details and these, instead of your IP address, would be used to identify you. It's simple to get a new email address but who would go to the trouble to open a bank account to post abuse? For those users that are consistently breaking the rules the AB Ed can ban their bank details so ABers would have to moderate themselves. I am not anti-free speech but the AB Ed obviously doesn't have the resource to moderate the site and there have been a fair few posts recently complaining about it.

Can I iterate now that this is not at all directed at any particular ABers.

I accept that it would put off users just wishing to come on here to post a quick law question but they would only need to pay the 5 and then they cancel. Also, it may mean they actually use the search function. Personally I think the AB search function is poor so a few more quid in AB's coffers may actually mean that they can sort out a proper metadata search and sort out the Beta site too.

Thoughts anyone?

(I am not expecting bloodshed but I have St Johns on standby just in case).

Brill idea tho meglet, people would just move on to non-paying sites tho I think, there are plenty of them
Pay?

For this?

Are you nuts?

Seriously though, I've never received a sensible answer that hasn't come from Google or been a Wikipedia link, so if a lifetime subscription was only 1p I'd not bother.

Maybe newbies should be proposed & seconded by an existing member & any misbehaviour would then affect all parties. Not much is gonna work unless the site is mediated. I think some mediation would resolve the probs to a large extent.
You all know I meant moderate
No, I think mediation would help too. lol :-)
I am not sure that even having paid members would help. I had an unpleasant experience on a paid for site a few weeks back. Police are now involved and were intending to get the site administrators to disclose the IP address of this particular person.

Well Leg -you would get your moneys worth !!

I dont know if I would pay or not -I see where you are coming from meg -but-the problems really lie with the Adminstrators of this site and they are happy to cash in on the advertising but not with policing it.

I dont think I would pay -although its cheaper than a night out and can be entertaning -what a quandry.

I'll take the fifth ATM.
i have no problem with some kind of payment so long as it is NOT direct debit.i have had problems with direct debit in the past.last time was with tiscali they kept charging me 3 months later it cost me over 18 in phone calls to get 36 back. so if its payment by direct debit i'm off
o sorry puss -off topic -my daughter has wracked up a fortune trying to deal with Tiscali -they are refunding her charges -ex gratia -try it !!
quoi joining through association would only make it cliquier, if you stump up a small monthly cost you should be allowed to join.

HA! Never, ever!!
Yes,certainly,no problem.
No I've got better things to spend my money on.
No, most definitely not. I applaud your efforts on how to deal with the abusive posters, but I would not pay to subscribe to this site.

I would never pay for an on line community when there are many other (better ones) out there for free

For AB'ers who consistently break the rules there are things that AB can do to stop them rejoining; they choose not to use that ability
