Where I work no one switches of the toilet light. So I asked for a sign to be put up saying 'Please switch of the light when leaving'

A co-worker says the light fitting is meant to be left on all the time as it costs more to ignite the bulb.

Can this be true?

It will depend on the type of bulb, how often people are going in and out etc.

Also, think of the energy used making a sign! Paper, ink, something to stick it up with.......!!
The 'Mythbusters' program looked into this, and came up with figures for the extra energy needed to start up various lamps compared to the energy used when they were fully on.

Energy saving CFL - 0.015 seconds
Fluorescent tube - 23.3 seconds
Incandescent: 0.36 seconds
Halogen: .51 seconds
LED: 1.28 seconds
i agree with twenty 20, its all to do with how often its used and how long the light is left on for. you could always put forward the suggestion to your boss to have a PIR sensor or PIR light unit fitted but it will cost a small amount and will depend on his/her view on being green
