LOP + E(ast & S(outh) in bridge.

The groundhog is known as Punxsutawney Phil and LIP is backchat
4d in the game of bridge, the 4 players are named after the compass points - East and West play versus North and South - therefore E(ast + S(outh) would be opponents.

I note your second Q has not been answered by anyone yet.

If you google (like I did) you will find that Punxsutawney groundhog's name was Phil. You have got the rest. !!
