I thought for many months that the system that is used at work was totally seperate from the internet, until I managed to send an email home to my hotmail account. Since then people have mailed me outside the system. Does this mean therefore that when I work from home there is a way of accessing the system?

It may be that your network that contains all business information is on an intranet, which is indeed seperate from the internet for security reasons.. However e-mail does not work in that way, and you can e-mail outside of the intranet.
Further to the previous answer, their is a connection from your company's internal internet (which is known as an intranet), but it is policed by a hardware/software combination known as a 'firewall'. This can be set up to allow people inside the intranet to browse websites outside the intranet or not, and to allow outside emails to come in, and inside emails to go out.

If your inttranet website were accessible generally from outside then it wouldn'r be an intranet. However there may be access possible via a password or special phone number to dial into.

why not ask your system admisnistrator or your manager

Unauthorised access, though, is hacking and willn ot do you career prospects any good.
