myself and a mate were reminising about our childhood tv cartoons and he mentioned one i didn't recall. one with sort of like a totem pole which split in to various animals who went off to help people any ideas

I'm too old to remember 1980s kids' TV. (I'm old enough to remember Bill and Ben the first time round!). However, a bit of Googling suggests that your mate might be thinking of Paw Paw Bears.

I am lioke Chris, old enough to remebert Patricia Driscoll on Picture Book but after that ir gets hazy lol though I do recall tales of the Riverbank.
