To my knowledge it was Kenya, December 12, 1963... some of the best novels ever written about Africa were Robert Ruark's.  Especially Something of Value. This covers the Mau-Mau uprisings that resulted in the independence of Kenya...
After having a poke about it looks like it could be  The Gambia, having   gained its  independence in 1965.
Rhodesia declared 'unilateral' independence (unrecognised by Britain)in 1965, but was not OFFICIALLY granted independence until 1980, when it became Zimbabwe.
Swaziland and Mauritius didn't gain independendence from Britain until 1968.
I concede to archbishop, Swaziland it is - well so far....

Thank you,Clannad,
Cetti,Tartanwiz and Archbishop. Your answers have given me food for thought.I will research them thoroughly and finally pick the one which i think will get me a share or all of the 50 on offer(it's a rollover this month) in the Village church kwiz. I have another question which i don't know where to put(careful now,i meant which category),it's about a crow and a decorating tool, any suggestions?.

A crow and a decorating tool?

The mind boggles -  but to give you an even chance you could pick from Animals & Nature, Body & Soul or Home & Garden. This should cover all eventualities!
