After some recommendations on this site I have bough a Sonicare. Two questions: are you meant to use toothpaste and is it realy a 24 hour charging period?

yes and yes. After the first time, you can just sit the brush in the holder and keep it charged. if it does run out, I find that mine charges in about 8 hours after the initial charge

Yes, you're supposed to use toothpaste.  They recommend a gel.  Can't remember about the initial charging period.  After the initial period, a couple of hours a week keeps it topped it.
