"Where there is illegal material on the net, I want it removed."

Ms Smith.

The beginning of censorship of the Web or just another New Labour sound bite?

Iv often wondered why they havnt done more to censor or shut down these sites when they seem to do more to shut down sites that you can illegally download music or films from.
Are those the only two options?

Surely it is "Big Business" that try to close down "Free Media sites, not politicians?

It becomes a little more serious when The State" starts to Censor, what we are allowed to see or hear.
Because the web is a world thing, it cannot be controlled by any one country. Labour might say they want content on a site removed, but if the site is hosted in Tuvalu and they say we don't give a stuff, the government are powerless to do anything. Other than block links at british ISPs.
How? How is that at all possible? New Labour sound bite. What's legal in one country isn't in another?

Dirty paedophiles will still use the internet as will terrorists, how many people would it take to monitor everything on t'internet and shut down everything that is illegal? Surely half the world would have to be working on that.

The reason some of these music sites cant be shut down is because they are run from somewhere else where the copyright laws are different, or people agree not to share illegal material but they still do. This protects the site and leaves only the individuals to blame.

IMAO if the web is censored,it could be classed as totalitarian which goes against the very idea of democracy...........

The idea of democracy is ambiguous, democracy within reason seems to be the law though again is this a form of humane dictatorship? (for the common good?)

The world runs on ambiguities of power and control, how can any govenrment be seen to censor (piracy) when they are in power (in the west) through democracy?

This how west has been civilised.......anyone think of a better system?.........lol!
oh yeah, except world freedom and world peace, but would this ideal scenario be politically advantageous to those in power or not?
Interesting to see how it operates in china:
