I used the injection for years and years. Worked perfectly for me!
This has them all:

http://www.fpa.org.uk/information/leaflets/

Others include the cap, injection, implant and IUS (Mirena - a type of coil combined with hormones).

If you ask at your GP's they will tell you when the family planning clinic is on near you (usual have evening sessions, so will fit in around work, college etc) with specialist doctors and nurses with all the info on what will be right for you.
I would say the injection is pretty much the same as the pill as its hormones. There is such a thing as natural family planning which is supposed to be 98% effective if you dont want to take the pill, but it means avoiding sex or using condoms when your are fertile which you work out by taking temp etc. look on the family planning association website fpa.org.uk for more info
The rhythm method.

Not exactly precise and your most likely to make mistakes but its completely natural if thats your sort of thing.

aims, you are correct in that the injection is hormones but the pill is a combination of oestrogen and progesterone whereas the injection is progesterone only. It works in a totally different way.

I went on the injection having not got on with the pill at all and was perfectly fine on the injection - no weight gain, no mood swings, no he\adaches etc

thanks...thats useful.

is there any reason why the majority of people choose the pill not the injection?
I quite fancy opting for the injection cos i cant swallow pills..major drawback in the pill contraceptive for me obviously..but i was wondering why you don't hear many people talk of it.
dunno why - it was great for me! plus you dont get any periods
I dont know of other contraception as I have the Mirena coil. I am due to have it changed this summer but I have had it in for almost five years - thats been five years, period free!

The coil is great as once its in, there no need to worry. I can never be relied upon to take the pill or buy condoms.

Its the best thing ive ever done!
I think the reasons why most women don't go for the injection are:

Its not offered much (must be more expensive) or

It stops your period and lasts for 3 months. Some women don't actually like the thought of not having a period (personally I dont get that AT ALL) Then can take 6 months after the last injection to get your period back so if you intend to start a family you have to wait a lot longer than if you just stopped taking the pill.

If you have no plans for a family soon I would recommend you go to the family planning centre and speak to someone about it.

ok thanks i will do just that.
The injection isn't for everyone. At first I loved it - it stopped my periods altogether - which was fantastic, but I put a lot of weight on as well. If you are prepared to watch your weight it would be a good choice - but be warned, your fertillity can take over a year to return so if you want children in the near future it might not the best option. But if not, at least you don't have to remember to take the pill every day. It only contains progesterone so has the same benefits as the mini pill (so fewer side effects than the usual combined pill). Oh, and the injection is quite deep so can be bit sore for a day (it hurt my arm too much first time so I got it in my backside after that - much less painful! ;)

you should not just make assumptions Neil. This discussion was about contraception. Many people are ignorant to the fact that diseases can rapidly spread - but who's to say that the people in this discussion are some of them?!

I think you are being ignorant.
