I have been claiming JSA from Aug 2007 to date and I have been offered a career with the NHS ( 15 hours per week ), now im just waiting for my start date : )

I still live at home so I know I cant claim housing etc but does anyone know something that the jobcentre do not tell you?

I understand that I would still receive JSA and that I would be allowed to keep the 1st 5....( what a joke!)
but is there anything else I can claim back eg; tax or a clothing allowance, or help with the travel cost?

I informed my tax office when I resigned in Aug 2007 and they are also aware that iam currently receiving JSA.
I have enquired about the p50 but due to receiving JSA I can't claim this way.
The jobcentre were given my p45 when I started JSA but I have no idea what they do or if I need to ask them to do something with it?.

This is the 1st time and hopefully the last time I have had to claim JSA, I would be very grateful for ANY help or advise you give............

Kind Regards

Ha Ha......I dont know??
People keep telling me to claim my taxback for the time I was working ( 10 years+)

I take it thats a no then?
You've omitted some very important information. i.e. you've not told us about your earnings from April 2007 (the start of the tax year) and August 2007.

If you were employed, and paying PAYE, the tax you paid on your earnings would have been calculated on the assumption that you'd continue to earn at the same rate throughout the year. Because your income has since dropped, you might have a fairly small amount of over-paid tax due to you.

If you were to you come off JSA completely , you'd automatically be issued with a new P45, which would show your total income for the tax year (i.e. your gross pay from April to August plus the total JSA paid to you). It would also show how much tax you've paid so far in this tax year. Your new employer would automatically adjust your tax and you'd be refunded any excess tax through your pay.

As you'll still technically be on JSA, you might not automatically get a P45. You should ask the staff at JobCentre Plus to ensure that you're provided with a document showing your total income and tax paid, for the current financial year, prior to the date that you commence work. Once your new employer has that document, they should be able to adjust your tax accordingly (including paying you any tax refund due to you).

All that Chris says is correct (as always). But I don't think he has mentioned that JSA forms part of your total income for the year that is assessed for tax purposes.

Cheers Chris....

I will enquire at the jobcentre this week with regards to my P45...thank you

Thanks Buildersmate.....

I am aware that my JSA forms part of my yearly income and is included when asessed, my tax office mentioned something about this and that they would re-asess a working tax credit claim when I start my new job or the end of tax year- (which ever is sooner)

Thanks agian for all your help / advise x
