Keyboard trouble

I have recently re installed windows xp. Everything is fine apart from i cant get a pound sign. It comes up# instead. Also to get @ i need to push ". I think it is an American setting or something. Can anyone tell me how to change it?

On the left hand side of the keyboard, press Alt and Shift together.
