Was it not Princess Anne ....when she married Mark Phillips .
Shaney is correct. Half way down it says Anne paved the way.http://www.timesonline.co.uk/article/0,,3-1420 057,00.html
Depends on what you mean by a commoner.

Edward IV secretly married Elizabeth Woodville.

She was the daughter of Sir Richard Woodville who was later made an Earl but was originally a squire from Grafton

Does she count as a commoner?

Thankyou so much for your help Jake, not sure if she counts as a commoner? Will try and do some more research to see if she 'counts'!

Obviously if anyone else knows please let me know!!!

Thankyou!
I'm sure in the past many commoners have married into the Royal Family but if you are talking about modern times, then Princess Margaret, the late sister of the Queen, married Anthony Armstrong Jones in 1960 (way before Princess Anne got married) although he did take the title of Lord Snowdon on marriage.
