what i can take (other than paracetamol) for a cold / flu symptoms?

I know we cant take decongestants and i cant get to see a GP til new year so has anyone found a safe releif from the cold and flu bugs going around? I never had a cold last time i was pregnant so never really took note of what i could take.

Mr CRX had a bad cold last weekend and i thought id managed to avoid it but obviously it just took longer to appear in me. Got headache, sore throat, streaming nose, bunged up ears etc and just generally feel like pants (not even sexy pants, but great big grey apple catcher pants!!!! lol)

little psychick is curled up watching Casper at the moment but seems to be feeling alot better today so Im going to get us ready for a little trip into town soon. I will ask at my pharmacy what I can take and let you know :) Have a feeling theyre just going to say paracetamol though :(

Just had a thought, what about gargling dissolvable paracetamol to help with the sore throat?
Sorry i have just read through this post and noticed your not supposed to eat honey. What!!? I have been craving runny honey on toast and eaten loads. I havent seen it written anywhere that this isnt allowed, does anyone know the details?

Sorry to hear your feeling poorly Red, hope you get better soon x

thank you roomster!!!!!! :)

i just googled honey and pregnancy as it WAS a no-no 3 years ago when i was last pregnant and i found that its no longer of the foods to avoid list!

So thats helped me out and you dont need to worry about your craving!

Lol it is red, even when you aren't pregnant and are allowed to take stuff for it!
One thing that does help a bit is a bit of Vicks vapour rub or Olbas oil in a bowl of hot water and inhaling it, then keep doing it every hour or so and if your ears hurt try wrapping a hot water bottle in a towel and lie on your side with your ear over it.

psychik, let me know if your pharmacist comes up with anything. Wrap up warm for your trip out and dont overdo it will you!

gargling with anything is likely to make me throw so i dont think i will risk it, just found that i can take honey though so happier!
Excellent! What a relief, thank you. Hopefully it works for you Red!
lol red thats why I wont attempt gargling myself! And honey would definately make me gag and throw up!

Just getting ready now, the sun has even come out! Will let you know what they say.
for ur bunged-ypness ect u cud try vick's um thingy rub. it vick's and u put it on ur back and chest and it clears ur breathing.

so vick vapourub is ok in pregnancy?

apparently it works best if rubbed into bottom of your feet but i didnt think it was ok for pregnancy. Will dig out the pot and read the label
Hello peeps, I too feel crappy today if it's any consolation. My sinuses have been painful the past few days and the pressure has been feeling like my head is going to burst, as well as having bungy ears and sore neck. I have ankles like elephants and my eyes are nice and pink because I am constantly tired! These little ones have it in for us I am sure.

I have been trying to drink lots of water (not the most attractive of drinks over a) the Christmas period and b) in the cold) and having lots of vitc C by eating satsumas or drinking orange juice. I am going to get a lemon at Tesco and have honey and lemon when I get back, then a glass of wine tonight before I pass out and sleep for an eternity. I can't wait for bedtime :-)

This website says Vaporub is safe:

haha natalie, Im trying to drink lots and lots of water too but it then makes it scary when i sneeze! :(

I hope you feel better soon as well hun, I found the vapourub and have put it all over the bottom of my feet which is supposed to work.
Ah well, at least we are not alone in our suffering!

I have asked my pharmacist and she has said there is nothing other than paracetamol that is safe to take during pregnancy :(

Im not feeling too bad at the moment but that little stroll into town, even though I took it easy and havent carried anything, has given me the worst backache! I still have to face going to tesco to get all the food and goodies in for christmas in a little while :(
Hello Redcrx, I know I am a little late but one of those sudafed or similar plug in vapour things are brilliant and unlike vick which lasts half hour they last 8 hours all night. They are great but you will find that just about everything in the chemist will have a pregnancy no no on it. I worked in there for years and every year we were amazed by what seemed to be added to the no no list every year when a year ago it was apparently fine. I cannot see that an inhalation is a bad thing, check with the mid wife too as at the end of the day a poorly mum is not good for baby either so there is a practical side too. Good luck to all you pregnant ladies out there. I am having no more and although I hated being pregnant I have fond memories of it too.XXXXXX
