Just three, I believe. The last was Edward VII, Queen Victoria's eldest son.

Edward's second son became George V. George's eldest, Edward VIII was never crowned, and his second son became George VI, the present Queen's father.
The 'royal' system of crowning the eldest son of the tribal chief or king as the next king goes back about 8000 years. If we take a generation as 25 years (based on average age of when a young king will father a son), then it would be 4x8000, so your answer is 32,000 generations.
The answer depends on how you interpret the question. I would go with Saxy's answer.

but I obviosly was wrong

surprising how many monarchs have not been the eldest child of the last ruler (even Edward VII had an older sister). Before that, I think George IV in 1820 was the next most recent.
