I have a 7 year old cat and was thinking about getting a dog, but she has been alone for all these years I am afraid she will distance herself or feel excluded. I don't want a dog that will intimidate her or make her feel like her territory has been dominated. Any suggestions on what type a dog would best suit this situation?

Hi deathbleeder. Have a look at rescues as they tend to know if the dogs they are rehoming are able to live with cats. If you want to buy a puppy from a breeder then look closely at the adverts, some state that the puppies have been socialised with children, cats etc. Daffi x

Its depends on the individual dog rather than the breed or type. I have had greyhounds with cats, and rehomed some to people with cats, but some of them I would rehome with a small dog let alone a cat.

I had two GSD's and two persian cats who all ate out of the same bowl, and one of the cats used to grab the dogs ears in his paws and lick them inside and out. The dogs used to just lay on their back with a silly grin on their faces.

I'd get a puppy and let it grow up knowing the cat is boss.
Should have said 'wouldn't' rehome with a small dog
a whippet bitch is about the most mild tempered dog you can get. brilliant with kids or other animals. but be aware, we had a cat that didn't get on with our new dog and used to knock 7 bells out of him

Thanks for your answers.

I decided to get a golden retriever puppy from a breeder. He was born into a house with many cats, hopefully he will be used to them by the time I pick him up and will get along with mine. Although it will probably the cat who has a hard time adjusting to the dog.
