What planet is this Government on? One minute we are told there is not enough space to house criminals and now we are to send people to Jail for using a mobile. Meanwhile hoodies burglars and other villains get a tap on the wrist.

Has Gordon lost the plot?

He's let his eye off the ball!
If you actually read about what is happening, there is now the possibility of going to prison for up to 2 years for using a mobile (or other equipment) whilst driving.

Just as not all burglars go to prison, not all drivers will go to prison - it will depend on the circumstances in the case.

A burglar will possibly effect a few people in a home and maybe cause a few hundred pounds worth of damage.

A person driving with a phone to their ear raises the possibilities of killing people and causing several thousand pounds worth of damage (as well as inconvenience to lots of other road users)
it's only in cases of dangerous driving. I wouldn't mind all dangerous drivers being locked up whether they were using mobiles or not.
There was a case a year or so back of a lorry driver driving on a motorway (or main A road).

There were signs saying "there may be queues ahead" but because he was playing around with his new phone he did not see them.

He ploughed into the back of a car in which a 24 year old woman was sitting at the back of the queue.

The car was crushed and went UNDER the lorry, and the woman was killed.

The driver thought he has hit the car IN FRONT of hers becuase her car had been compressed so much.

Do you think think that BA5STARD deserved prison ?

My wife was nearly in an accident yesterday because of some idiot going round a roundabout using his mobile phone. To steer the wheel he had to move his mobile from one hand to another and nearly drove into my wife's car.

I think ANYONE using their mobile phone while driving should be banned for a year (at least). There is NO EXCUSE for it.
a mobile wiped out a whole family that i knew bar one now he is an orphan they should be banned for life even hands free are dangerous as they still distract your attention no matter what
using a mobile whilst driving should be an automatic 12 months ban and then they should be made to take a re test.
what did these people do before mobile phones?? new cars should be made some how where by it stops your phone being used , other than 999 calls whilst the engine is running, and i can see it coming in the near future, something has to be done to stop these idiots, i cant believe that something is so desperate that a person has to risk lives as to take or make a call whilst driving
I lost all hope at the weekend.

I witnessed an altercation outside an hotel. Just a little tiff, no violence, but a drink was spilled on a woman.

10 armed police turned up (this was at Gatwick Airport). I did ask one copper if there was any danger of him and his mates missing out on catching some terrorists, rapists or burglars.

He wasn't amused.
The law is near universally disregarded for mobile phones (as for speeding motorcyclists). I regularly count motorists using mobiles on my cycle ride to work - 6 this morning. I hope that in all accidents these days the police check for evidence of mobile phone use - and if discovered the penalties should be draconian. I was once nearly killed by a woman pulling out of a side-turning while yacking on a mobile. Yes, imprisonment by all means.
It is not only mobile phones that they are concerned about, it is anything that distracts one from driving safely.

What should be outlawed is the onboard entertainment systems that are still allowed in cars. How some drivers can be aware of emergency warning sirens etc. with the amplified music??? that radiates forth from some vehicle's sound systems. There are even in-built DVD players now.

There is no need for music etc to be played in cars, can't people go anywhere now unless they have their constant intake of sound blasting in their ears?

If it is necessary for relaxation and concentration, why don't Airline Pilots, Train drivers and Coach/Bus Drivers also find it necessary?

I agree, AOG.

It has always amazed me that cars can be fitted with DVD players, SatNav and CD players (not to mention ashtrays) when they appear to be a distraction to the driver.
The law has always been there for dangerous driving so why another one. I think that's the point.
Disgusting they'll be expecting motorists to to obey the Highway Code next !
