The company I work for is owned by the RBS Group, and I recently asked the payroll department to change the bank account that my salary gets paid into, I was told that they would not change it to my new account as this account was not a bank owned by the RBS Group, This must be against compitistion laws or something, also what right does a employer have to dictate what bank your salary goes into.
Thanks

if it was or is not a clause in your contract then no they can't dictate which bank, but if it is in your contract then yes they can. In fact, you can have a salary paid into any bank account, it does not have to be yours.
I used to work for RBS group and that was the rule, your salary had to go into an account with the group. At one time many moons ago when I first started, you weren't even allowed to have a bank account with another bank but that has been relaxed now.
If you employment contract forces you to have your salary paid into an RBS account and that is not convenient for you, I guess you can always set up a standing order on the first of every month (once you know your salary has arrived) for it to be transferred to another bank of your choice.
