It is a disorder of the metabollism. It either works too fast burning too many calories resulting in the person being underweight, or it works too slow, which is more common, resulting in the person being overweight, as the body can't burn calories fast enough.

I have an underactive thyroid which causes your metabolism to grind to a halt. The useless doctors didn't diagnose it for 18 months in which time I had piled on weight. Luckily, the pills worked really well for me and I'm back to normal now. Having an overactive thyroid sounds much worse though.
