I ordered a product through the Amazon website, but the order was actioned by an online electronics company. They did not have stock of the product I wanted so I accepted their recommended substitute. This was deliver direct from a company in France.
The payment and subsequent discounts have all been actioned via Amazon
Who is my contract with?
If the product doesn't work who is responsible, and to whom should I return it?

The company you bought from in France. When you buy from the amazon marketplace as it's called, amazon arranges the payment but the company are responsible for everything else. If the product doesn't work contact the seller, if they're not co-operative you can lodge a complaint with amazon as a last resort.
