I seem to keep getting styes just on one of my eyes. I had a meibomian cyst removed from the same eye earlier this year which hurt like hell, so am desperate to try and stop the styes and avoid another cyst appearing. Is there anything I can do to try and prevent the styes from recurring?

Thanks

I'm not sure I have an answer but I suffered from the same sort of thing and had 3 cysts removed and had recurring styes. When the 4th cyst grew I really didn't want to go through having it removed. The eye doc suggested trying a course of antibiotics as a last resort and it worked. I also got my eyes tested and got some decent glasses. I haven't had one since (10yrs) and rarely get a stye anymore.
You do have my sympathy as part from looking horrible the removal is no joke.

Thanks Pesk. It really does hurt doesn't it!!

I'm slightly hesitant about going to the doctors because I read only a week or two ago that being treated with antibiotics for styes can actually encourage meibomian cysts. I had about 3 weeks worth of antibiotics earlier in the year for styes etc in this eye and the cyst did appear. Quite possibly totally unrelated though...
Just had another thought as to why I haven't had one for a while. I used to get bletheritis - crusty bits in and around the eyelashes. I was advised to "wash" the eyelashes using a cotton bud & baby soap. I still do this out of habit and don't use soap any more - just a cotton bud with warm water. Maybe improving the hygene around the eyelid helped.

My cyst came about as a result of blepharitis. Though when I had blepharitis I didn't know what it was so was slow to do anything about it. I have to admit that I don't keep up with the cotton bud/baby shampoo thing as often as I should - need to get into the habit of it, like you. Thanks for your answer! Nice to hear from someone who has had a similar problem!
