Is the main theme tune a famous classical piece? I noticed that in the 10/10/04 episode (the spiritualist one) the brass band at the village fete were playing this tune.

I may be wrong but I don't think it's anything other than a theme tune that was composed specifically for the series. I noticed the brass band playing it, I think that was just a sort of 'in joke'.
A funny thing about Midsummer is it is worse thern Bogota, if you compere inhabitans and so on. Often more then one murderer a week in a little village. Do I dare go to Merry old England
Someone should investigate that John Nettles fellow. When he was Bergerac, the crime rate in Jersey was appalling. When he moved to Midsummer, the murder rate soared and no more crime was reported from Jersey. It's him that's doing it!!!
