If the the Liberal Democrats thought Ming Campbell was past his "sell by date" why were they so keen to get rid of him before the leadership vote, when the temporary leader Vincent Cable is only 2 years younger than Ming?

He decided when he would go by resigning.
The temporary leader is just a stop gap person until they elect the young thrusting Cameron lookalike Nick Clegg.
The best answer to this i have heard is that Ming appeared far older than he actually was.

Yes, Vince Cable was ONLY two years younger and I think Ashdown was actually older when he finished as leader than Ming was.

Incidentally, i dont think the Lib Dems did think he was past their sell by date - but the electorate clearly did and this can't be ignored forever.
