Can anyone recommend a publication or website that explains wi-fi in crisp, clear terms an idiot can follow? In particular, I have a five-year-old Toshiba laptop. Works like a dream. I want to be able to use it for internet connection when I'm out in the boondocks. Obviously, wi-fi is the answer. But how?

Don't even consider using a mobile connection .... not even for e-mail.
The "reasonable" tariffs are capped at unreasonably low limits .... go over and you pay big bucks

It's ok if someone else is paying ... but look out for free hotspots

mcdonalds have just announced all their franchises will offer it free ....and some of the fancy coffee shops do already

google shows other free sites .....

Wifi hotspots work perfectly well and are reasonably cheap -some in the UK are free, such as the Village Hotels.

You just need to buy a cheap wifi adapter for your laptop and sign up with Openzone or The Cloud for where you do have to pay to connect.

You say you want to use it when you're out in the boondocks, but I'd have thought a pretty common definition of the boondocks would be a place with no wifi hotspots.
