My colleague at work has just got a Renault Scenic (57 plate) automatic. She's only had it 3 weeks and it's drinking petrol for fun. She's only doing around 150 miles per week and it's costing her around 50-60 in petrol. Obviously automatics are a little thirstier, but not this bad ! As it's a new car the garage have told her it'll take time to bed in, but have said there's nothing wrong with it. Does anyone know if this is normal, or what the problem is ?

There may be a running in period yes.

She would need to keep a note of exaclty how many miles she is doing in a week (can be taken from the milage counter on the car if it's easier) and then work out how many litres she is putting into the car.
The price of petrol varies so if she's putting 50 worth of fuel one week and the week later the fuel price goes up then the cost will increase.

Also she would need to check the milage figures specified by renault and bearing in mind they are only a guide work it out from there. Town driving uses more fuel than driding at 60mph tire pressure and colder weather and luggage and stuff stowed in the car may affect fuel consumption too.

Lots of working out but in the end she should be able to work out what's going on with the fuel.
Just found this website, if it's acurate it's quite surprising !

I'm surprising myself with the website link I posted, my fuel works out at 54mpg and as the weather has been getting colder I've noticed that I've not been getting as much milage.

There was me worrying and in the end it was just fuel costs that have changed...lol
I disagree with one fuel saving tip on that website, about opening windows instead of turning on AC.

Open windows create drag, which is apparently about equivalent to the extra power used to run the AC.
It does mention that on the website but it would be more beneficial for the miles per gallon calculator I meant more than the rest as there are lots of ways to reduce fuel bills and could be there for ages talking about them...lol
Are your figures right.?
At 1 a litre she's buying 50 litres or 11 gallons. (aprox figures)
150 miles = 13 mpg !!!!!!!
Sigma, I did say MY fuel...sorry if you misunderstood.

Does you mate wanna buy a 1996 Honda Civic Misty? lol
cockney_si, those were the figures in the question, 50 to 60 and 150 miles a week
Is your friend used to driving an auto? not doing something daft like using D1 instead of drive
i thought my mondeo was bad at 50 for 200 miles!-(although its less than 1000miles on rebuilt engine)

Yes, 50-60 per week in fuel are what she's paying at the moment. I think she's taking it in to the garage to be checked out !
No way. I'm sorry but unless she had a 6 cylinder petrol engine, there is no way a measley little four pot in an auto Megane would return such shocking figures. The only shocking figures are the exaggeration on her part if that's what you've been told. Sorry
