My sister had knee pains when she was about that age and was told that they were 'growing pains' but maybe kids ailments are too often put down to growing pains. I'd go back to the doctors with him. Hope he feels better soon!
Go to a different doctor and see if you get another, more helpful, opinion!

Do take him back to the GP.  If it is making him cry then there is obviously something wrong.  All sorts of things can go wrong with kids knees.  They are quite complex joints and take a lot of battering and abuse from young children!  My own son had a problems from quite a young age with both of his knees.  He had a problem called Osgood-Schlatter disease which is quite common in kids (and sounds worse than it is!)  I am not suggesting this is what is wrong with your son.

Whatever our experiences, if it's making him cry you should at least get it checked out again, perhaps by a different doctor.

But before you worry too much, I used to get exactly the same thing & it stayed with me until my early teens.  In my case there was absolutely nothing wrong & it really was growing pains - I just suffered with it a lot more than any of my friends seemed to.  And yes, quite often it was enough to make me cry.

i had the very same thing for years and was told it was growing pains, it can be very painful at times and used to come & go. To put your mind at rest take him back, but i wouldn't worry too much.
I would get a second opinion, even if it does turn out to be nothing to worry about, at least it will put your mind at rest. Hope the pain eases soon.
If the problem persists to the point where he remains in pain and is still crying I would take him along to A & E Dept as waiting to see the GP again may be too long a wait.  At least in A & E he will see a Paediatrician or Orthopaedic Specialist

Thankyou all for your replys,iv made an appointment with the doctor for him and i massaged his knee which eased the pain a little, thanks again.
I have absoulout terrible leg pains and kneww pains and my docter sais its just torn legiment or its okay nothings wrong though constant pain continues to come back. I defenetly thibk you need to check out an adult physician.

One thing that is relatively common in boys of that age and slightly older is a "slipped upper femoral epiphysis"  This is a condition affecting the growth of the thigh bone where it joins with the hip.

Due to complicated nerve pathways and such the pain is more often felt in the knee and so is often missed as you look at the knee and find nothing wrong!

Get him checked out by a orthopaedic trained doctor - its rare enough that a GP might miss it.  Or at very least mention it to the GP as a possibility.

(signs:  reduced range of movement of the left hip compared with the unaffected side.  BUT  best to diagnose with an xray)
