Prac-Tic

Had to take Max to the vets today, and while there I noticed they were doing a promotion for a flea treatment called Prac-Tic by a company called Novartis. It's a spot on treatment and Rachael, the vet was saying they've had good reports so far but I was wondering if anybody had used it and how it compered to Frontline.

My vet gave me "Advocate" for my yorkshire Terrier and it not only deals with flesa but worms as well.

I wuld never use any spot on treatment. I only ever use Frontline spray.

Lankeela why do you use the sprays not the spot on? I've always used frontline spot on and have never had any problems, It was just that I saw this product advertised and wandered if it was any good

Because the spot on treatments work by inhibiting the breeding and growth of the fleas and are not just a'knock down' killer like the spray. I would not want to put anything on my dog that will be absorbed into the blood stream with the capacity to inhibit growth or breeding of anything (including fleas). I have heard bad reports from many sources of reactions to spot on treatment as well.

It also builds up in the animals system, whereas the spray does its job and gradually wears off. Also I only use it when I see evidence of fleas and not all the time like you do the spot ons.

I have been happy with the Frontline spray even on baby puppies and bitches in whelp, although of course any prescribed medication has to be given with care and in the correct doses.

Please be aware that Advocate can be fatal if used on any of the collie breeds. It contains macrocyclic lactones and has to be given in very controlled doses. Also Milbemax, if you vet tries to prescribe these for any collie type dogs please ask for Drontal or Panacur.

Also if using Advocate, please do not also worm your dog as you can overdose as it already contains a high dose of worming treatment, particularly when used on small breeds such as Yorkies.

Thanks for the info Lankeela, it's always good to get other peoples imput on this sort of thing, as there are often lots of things the layman doesn't realise such as the use of Advocate and worming. Any way thanks again for the info.
