You may as well ask what hip hop fans are all about, and why they wear trousers that make it look like their bum has fainted. They're equally a subculture focused around a particular type of music; there's nothing that mysterious about it.
Gothic music is a sub-genre of punk, and often has themes of romance, philosophy (particularly existentialism) and borrows imagery from the Gothic literature movement of the 19th century. It's often characterised as being very bleak and humourless and death-obsessed, but that's massively simplistic.
Like any movement, there's a wide range of bands and styles that fit under the Gothic banner. Nick Cave, for example, has performed 'Gothic Country' music. The Mission had a very funny parody of Bauhaus's 'Bela Lugosi's Dead' called 'Bela Lugosi's Dad' performed in broad Yorkshire accents. Other key bands include Souixie and the Banshees, The Sisters of Mercy, The Fields of the Nephilim and The Cure.
Clothing tends to be black and was traditionally influenced by Victoriana and Edwardian styles, though increasingly this is not the case.
I like goths. In my experience, they're normally very funny and interesting people, and entirely aware (and amused by) of the disdain in which they're held by most.
