What do you mean by "a dirty install"? Did you clean the virus first with a specific tool?

I used trendmicro.com 's www.housecall.antivirus.com to remove the virus they have an automatic tool to scan and remove it from the system. Virus is now no longer detected. I was advised to reinstall Windows ME ontop of what was already on my PC by "Dell Computer" tech support people. That didnt fix my problem. The message that its ok to shutdown, still doesnt appear. My computer does still seem to shutdown ok, as the light goes off in my drive and the monitor light switches from green to amber. I wish I hadnt done the install overtop what I had already. I had upgraded to IE 6, but now I'm back to 5.5 and I cant upgrade because Windowsupdate thinks I've already updated due to some out of sync files I guess. Dell says the next step is to backup my hard drive, erase the hard drive and reinstall everything. I am hoping that I dont have to do that.... I will probably have to take in it or have someone come in, cause I dont feel confident enough to do it. Any help is appreciated.... thanks
OK - doesn't sound like you have too many problems. First about the shutdown. It's really not necessary to have the "ok to turn off your computer" stage. Windows ME is quite intelligent enough to shut itself down (something called ACPI) - in fact most people (myself included) have it set this way. My guess is that in reinstalling ME you now have ACPI support enabled. So don't worry - if your drive light goes out, the fan noise stops and the monitor loses sync then that sounds shut down to me! Getting IE6 back shouldn't be a problem. Go to Windows update and click the show installed updates tag. Scroll down and you should see IE6 "already installed" with an uninstal button underneath. Select this then when it has done its stuff run windows update again and install IE6. If this doesn't work try control panel/add remove programs and uninstall (or possibly repair) IE6 then reinstall. I don't feel you will need to wipe your hard disk and reinstall ME if you don't want to.

Moonacre? when I went to the microsoft updates page, and did show installed updates, they all show, but there is no uninstall on that site. I cant uninstall/repair from the ctl settings add/remove pgms, because Internet explorer is not showing up there. Now IE 5.5 doesnt work and Messenger doesnt work either, as I had updated them both. However, I can still use Netscape, so I guess I'll stick with that unless you have any more pointers! Thanks
Surprised about the no uninstall on the update site - it shows when I go there. I guess this must be something to do with your problem. The best thing I can suggest is that you install IE6 (or IE5) over your current configuration. If you download the software (20+ mb?) then make sure you choose the install later option as if you take the normal install online route it's likely to fail. Otherwise go and buy one of the PC mags with a coverdisk that has the software.Same with messenger. I think this should work. If not then you may have to delete a couple of specific files and/or make changes to your registry. Let me know how it goes.

Moonacre? hope you see this... I was able to solve my problem... The microsoft community message board suggested that I go to www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html and it has a tool to remove IE explorer completely. Then you reinstall it from CD, and upgrade again. Worked like a charm. Thanks
